Stone Care & Maintenance Guide
Keep your beautiful countertops looking brand new for a lifetime with our expert care instructions.
Universal Best Practices
No matter what material you choose, following these golden rules will help preserve your countertops.
What to Do
Wipe spills immediately: Especially acidic liquids like wine, coffee, fruit juices, and tomato sauce.
Use cutting boards: Protect both your knives from dulling and your countertops from potential scratching.
Use trivets or hot pads: While many stones are heat resistant, sudden extreme temperature changes can cause thermal shock and cracking.
What to Avoid
Harsh chemicals: Never use bleach, ammonia, oven cleaners, or paint removers on your countertops.
Abrasive cleaners: Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, or gritty cleansers (like Comet or Soft Scrub) which can dull the finish.
Standing or sitting: Countertops are strong but not designed to support the concentrated weight of a person, especially near overhangs.
Material-Specific Care
Tailored instructions for Granite, Quartz, and Solid Surface materials.
Granite
Daily Cleaning: Use a soft cloth with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. You can also use cleaners specifically formulated for natural stone.
Sealing: Natural granite is porous and requires sealing. We recommend resealing your countertops every 1-2 years. If water no longer beads up on the surface, it's time to reseal.
Stains: For stubborn stains, you can create a poultice using baking soda and water (for oil stains) or baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (for water-based stains).
Quartz
Daily Cleaning: Wipe clean with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water or a gentle glass cleaner (like Windex).
Sealing: Quartz is engineered to be non-porous. Never apply sealers, penetrants, or topical treatments to quartz countertops.
Heat Warning: Quartz contains resins that can melt or scorch if exposed to extreme heat. Always use a trivet under hot pots, pans, and heat-generating appliances like slow cookers.
Solid Surface
Daily Cleaning: Use soapy water or ammonia-based cleaners (unlike natural stone, ammonia is safe here).
Scratch Removal: Minor scratches can often be buffed out using a mild abrasive cleanser (like Bar Keepers Friend) and a green Scotch-Brite pad, rubbing in a circular motion.
Heat Warning: Solid surfaces are sensitive to heat. Direct contact with hot pans can cause blistering or cracking. Always use a trivet with rubber feet.
