Granite is one of the most durable natural stones available, making it an excellent choice for busy kitchens. However, to keep it looking as beautiful as the day it was installed, it requires the right care routine. Follow these expert tips to maintain your granite countertops.
Daily Cleaning Routine
The best way to clean granite daily is the simplest: warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Use a soft microfiber cloth or sponge to wipe down the surface. Once clean, dry the countertop with a separate microfiber cloth to prevent water spots and streaks.
What to Avoid: Never use harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or acidic cleaners (like vinegar or lemon juice). Acidic substances can break down the protective sealant and dull the finish of the stone over time. Also, avoid abrasive scouring pads that can cause micro-scratches.
Tackling Stubborn Stains
If you encounter a tough stain, don't panic. You can make a simple poultice at home:
- For oil-based stains (grease, cooking oil): Mix baking soda and water to form a thick paste.
- For water-based stains (coffee, tea, juice): Mix baking soda with a little hydrogen peroxide.
Apply the paste to the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, tape down the edges, and let it sit for 24 hours. Remove the wrap, let the paste dry completely, and then gently wipe it away. The poultice will pull the stain out of the stone.
The Importance of Sealing
Because granite is naturally porous, it must be sealed to prevent liquids from penetrating the surface. We recommend resealing your countertops every 1 to 2 years.
The Water Test: Not sure if it's time to reseal? Splash a few drops of water on the counter. If the water beads up, your seal is intact. If the water absorbs into the stone and darkens it within a few minutes, it's time to apply a fresh coat of sealer.
